Foss Double-Double Sparks Lady Spartans Past Nationally Ranked Riverland
A double-double by freshman Madi Foss (18 points, 11 rebounds) sparked the M State lady Spartans in their 61-55 victory over Riverland on Saturday in Fergus Falls.
A double-double by freshman Madi Foss (18 points, 11 rebounds) sparked the M State lady Spartans in their 61-55 victory over Riverland on Saturday in Fergus Falls. The lady Blue Devils came into the game ranked fourth in the latest NJCAA Division III National poll.
Jayna Gronewold had 11 of her game high 21 points in the first quarter, leading M State to a 22-7 lead after one. They built their lead to 21 points with just over 5 minutes left in the first half, however, Riverland came storming back to close the gap to 33-24 at the half. A 9-point run to start the second half forged the games only tie at 33-33, but with the score sitting at 48-47 in favor of M State, the lady Spartans went on a 8 point run to open up a 56-47 lead.
Itzel Salazar joined Gronewold and Foss in double figures with 12 points. She also dished out 3 assists and made 5-of-6 free throws. As a team, M State was 4-for-17 on the line, compared to 2-of-3 on free throws for Riverland.
Gronewold also had 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Mo Bugbee finished with 7 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals, and Kiera Cox distributed a team high 4 assists on the day.
M State improved to 7-4 overall and is off to a 2-0 start in the MCAC South. They will play at Anoka-Ramsey on Wednesday and at Western Tech in Wisconsin on Saturday.
