Lady Spartans Come up Short Against Raiders in Opening Round of Central Lakes Classic
The M State lady Spartans fell behind 25-14 to Central Lakes after the first quarter of their game in Brainerd on Friday night.
The M State lady Spartans fell behind 25-14 to Central Lakes after the first quarter of their game in Brainerd on Friday night. The Spartans charged back, outscoring the Raiders 24-10 in the second quarter to take a 38-35 halftime lead. The lady Spartans won the third quarter 15-12, increasing their lead to 6 points at 53-47 after three quarters of play. Central Lakes won the final 10 minutes, 19-10, finishing with a 66-63 victory over M State in the opening round of the CLC Classic.
Jayna Gronewold had a team high 20 points, while Mo Bugbee finished with 15 and Maddie Ballweg with 11. Gronewold also led with 4 steals and a pair of assists. Rebound leaders were Brooke Finken and Mia Blaskowski with 6 each.
Central Lakes placed four players in double figures, led by Kalli Papenfuss with 21. Alyssa Torgerson added 11, and two players, Antavia Bowstring and Jamie Johnson had 10 points each. Chesney Phillipp led the rebounding effort with 12 boards and Torgerson added 9. Papenfuss had 8 rebounds and 6 assists.
M State struggled from the 3-point line, making only one of fourteen attempts. They shot 38.6% (22/57) for the night and made 18-of-22 free throws. They were beaten on the boards, 45-25, with Central Lakes amassing 22 offensive rebounds.
Central Lakes shot 35.2% (25/71) and made 8-of-24 from beyond the arc.
The lady Spartans will face Minnesota North - Rainy River at 10:00am Saturday at Central Lakes College in Brainerd.
