Spartan Golfers Wins Region XIII National Qualifier
Spartan men's golfers qualify for the national tournament for the 9th consecutive year.
The Spartan men's golf team participated in Region XIII National Qualifier on Monday and Tuesday. The Men's Golfers captured the title with a 2 day score of 642 (314-328). With the victory the Spartans qualified for national tournament for the 9th consecutive year. This is the longest running streak in NJCAA Div. III golf. Leading the way for the Spartans was Grant Inniger who was the medalist with a 2 day 159 (76-83) Inniger was able to edge out M State's Wyatt Blomseth 160 (77-83), and SW Tech's Mike MacKinnon 160 (79-81). Carter Justesen had a great 2nd day for the Spartans as he carded the low round on Tuesday with a 79 on a course that turned much more difficult on day 2 with winds up to 30 mph.
One the women's side, Lexi Poyzer led the Spartan women with a 2 day 201 (98-103) while Carley Baumann carded a 219 (112-107)
Head Coach Jason Retzlaff had this to say about the qualifier. "It was an extremely tough day for scoring with the wind blowing all over, but our young men did what they needed to do after a playing very well in round one. I am very proud of this group and their efforts this Fall. Competing at the National Tournament as a team is such a memorable experience and I'm thrilled this team has earned a chance to compete with the best next June. I can't say enough about the quality of young men on this team. Congrats to Grant Inniger on earning medalist honors. He continues to improve and took his game to another level. The quality of shots he hit consistently over the last 2 days was very impressive. It will be fun to see him get a crack at Chautauqua in June. Lexi Poyzer and Carley Baumann had a very nice two days and did a fantastic job representing our golf program this Fall. They are both very good players and high character student-athletes. We are very thankful that they are playing such a big role in reigniting our women's golf program."
This concludes the golf schedule for the fall. The golfers will be in action again this Spring. The NJCAA Div. III Men's Golf Championship will be held from June 2-5, 2020 at Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, NY. The Spartans won the championship in 2012 and have finished 3rd in 2016, 2017 and 2019.
