Spartans Sweep Weekend Homestand
The M State Men's Basketball team avenged an early loss in Thief River Falls with an 80-70 victory over the Northland Pioneers on Saturday afternoon in Fergus Falls.
Langston Davis had a big day for the Spartans, pouring in 25 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Renell Edwards added 13 points and 5 assists, Mert Taylor had 11 points and 4 steals and Tyler Loe had 10 points. Brett Engelmeyer contributed 8 points and 5 steals off the bench.
The Spartans hit 29-of-83 (34.9%) field goal attempts and 11-of-43 (25.6%) 3's. They also were successful on 11-of-15 (73.3%) free throw opportunities. M State had 20 steals in the contest, forcing 33 turnovers.
Northland shot 50.8% (31-61) from the field and made 5-of-12 (41.7%) 3-pointers. They also held a 40-36 edge on the boards. They were led by Quincy Leday (21 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists), Ryan England (17 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists) and D'Mani Nettles (13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists). Zack Meyer contributed 6 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists).
M State had 22 assisted baskets on Friday night as they shot 42% (34-81) from the field in a 97-72 victory over the Itasca Vikings in Fergus Falls. The Spartans made 14-of-46 (30.4%) of their 3-point shots and held the Vikings to 34.8% (24-69) shooting on the night.
Brett Engelmeyer sparked the Spartans with 29 points off the bench, making 10-of-17 field goal attempts overall and 8-of-15 treys. Langston Davis contributed 14 points and 9 rebounds, Tyler Loe had 13 points, Larrie Bell added 11 points and 8 rebounds and Nic Pearson finished with 11 points. Renell Edwards had a solid floor game with 7 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 8 steals.
Itasca was led by Jerome Washington with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Rycen Lagmay-Yamada added 13 points and Deidrich Kemp had 12 points and 8 boards. Nick Grant contributed 13 points and 7 rebounds off the bench.
M State (5-2) will travel to Cloquet Friday for a 7:00pm game against Fond du Lac and will play NDSCS in Wahpeton on Sunday at 2:00pm.
