The women's basketball team opened their season at home on Saturday hosting Jamestown JV. The Jimmies began their season in October and had already played 16 games. The game featured several lead changes and was a back and forth battle. The Spartans led at halftime 34-29 but were unable to hold the lead as the Jimmes pulled away with less than a minute left to win 60-56. The game featured 11 lead changes and was tied nine times. M State was able to capitalize in the paint with 34 points to Jamestown 24. The Jimmies however were able score 18 points off Spartan rurnovers. With the loss the Spartans are now 0-1 overall.
The Spartans shot 35% from the field. Alison Kranz lead the Spartans with 23 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double. Jayna Gronewold contributed 12 points and Sabrina Fronning added 11. Gronewold and Fronning also dished out five assists.
Head Coach Jodi Holleman had this to say about the game. "We were very excited to get back on the court. We faced a very strong Jamestown JV team that had played several games. I was very pleased with how the girls played. We had nine freshman who played their first college basketball game. I am very confident that we will continue to improve each game. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to coach these talented young ladies."
The M State women will be back in action on Wednesday at they travel to Jametown, ND to take on the Jimmies again. Opening tip is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
