The 11-1 Rainy River Community College Women's Basketball team jumped out to a 30-11 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as they handed the M State Lady Spartans a 96-58 defeat on Saturday, putting M State at 4-7 heading into their Christmas break.
Rainy River made 47% (40-85) of their field goal attempts and shot 41% (11-27) from three point range. Daeja Monroe recorded a double-double (30 points, 10 rebounds) and added 7 assists for the lady Voyageurs. She was joined in double digits by Faitress Shaw (26) and Perrisha Cox (25). Taquiana Gant had a monster day on the boards, grabbing 23 rebounds while scoring 9 points. The Spartans were beaten 48-39 on the boards.
Sydney Hovland (13 points, 10 rebounds) registered a double-double for M State and Taylin Schleicher contributed 16 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals. Ashlee Rimpila came off the bench to add 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. The Spartans had 19 assists as a team, led by Kassandra Algarate with six, Olivia Winfrey with 5 and Alexa Mortenson with 4. They shot 39% (24-62) from the field and made 4-of-11 (36.4%) 3-point field goal attempts.
M State returns to action with a pair of home games during their Spartan Classic on January 4 (Mesabi Range) and January 5 (Itasca).
