The Northland lady Pioneers defeated the M State lady Spartans in a low scoring affair in Thief River Falls, posting a 52-36 victory on Wednesday night. Both teams played well defensively as M State struggled from the floor, hitting just 30.8% (16/52) of their shots and Northland made 20-of-64 field goal attempts for 34.3%.
"We struggled to get anything going offensively," said M State Head Coach Janice Hendrickson. "Northland did a good job defending and taking away easy shots. As a team we have a lot of potential, but we need to work on executing our game plan."
Northland held a 46-37 advantage on the boards and also capitalized on 23 Spartan turnovers which led to 23 points.
Taylin Schleicher led M State with 15 points on 7-of-14 shooting. She also grabbed six rebounds. Kassandra Algarate and Ashlee Rimpila each had 7 rebounds to lead the lady Spartans and Samantha Lupkes added 8 points. Algarate had a team high 4 assists.
Northland had two players in double figures with Emily Hestekind scoring 13 and Madison Stenzel adding ten. Megan Swedberg pulled down a game high 13 rebounds while blocking two shots.
M State (0-2) will travel to Moorhead on Tuesday for a 7:00pm tip-off against the Concordia JV team.
