The college basketball season started on Wednesday night for the M State lady Spartans as they hosted NDSCS from Wahpeton. The lady Wildcats posted a 76-50 win over M State, forcing 26 Spartan turnovers and hitting 44% (31/71) of their field goal attempts on the way to the win.
"It's always tough to open with NDSCS," said Spartan Head Coach Janice Hendrickson, "but it allows us to see areas we need to work on and where we want to be as a team. NDSCS was much quicker than us and they were able to score easily on some fast break opportunities. I was very impressed by the play of our freshmen. I think we have a lot of potential and the more time they get together the better they will be."
Leaders for M State were Macky Warne and Taylin Schleicher with 11 points each, Kassandra Algarate with 10, Samantha Lupkes with 7, Ashlee Rimpila with 6 and Lydia Klemetson with 5. Sam Dahlgren grabbed a team high ten rebounds, while Lupkes and Schleicher had 7 each. Klemetson and Lupkes each recorded 3 assists.
M State shot 35% (17/48) from the field and made 4-of-12 (33%) from 3-point range. They also hit 60% (12/20) of their free throws. NDSCS held a 40-38 edge on the boards, pulling down 15 offensive rebounds.
The lady Spartans will travel to Thief River Falls on Wednesday, November 15 to face Northland Community College.
