Justesen Throws No Hitter, Lady Spartans Win Two
The M State Lady Spartans traveled to Wilmar to take on the Ridgewater College Lady Warriors and earned a doubleheader sweep winning game one 9-0 in five innings and game two7-4. In game one, Lady Spartan freshman pitcher Tarryn Justesen threw a five inning no hitter and just missed a perfect game. The only base runner Ridgewater had was a two out walk in the bottom of the fifth. Justeson struck out 13 of the 16 batters she faced.
In game one, the Lady Spartans came out swinging and scored five runs in the first inning highlighted by a towering three run homerun by Sam Lupkes. The Lady Spartans were aggressive on the base paths and took advantage of some Ridgewater errors and some timely hits adding a single run in the second and three more in the third for a 9-0 lead. That was all they would need as Justeson was in complete control. She struck out the first ten batters she faced and the only balls put in play for Ridgewater was a popup to short and a foul ball out to the catcher. Justeson improves her record to 5-2 on the season.
In game two, Lady Spartan pitcher Doranna Blasyck struggled with her control early and gave up three runs in the first two innings but settled down the last five innings and allowed only one run the rest of the way. Blasyck helped her own cause with a two run single in the second to give the Lady Spartans a 3-1 lead. Ridgewater tied the game with two in the bottom of the second. The Lady Spartans added two in the fourth and two more in the sixth for a 7-3 lead. Ridgewater added a single run in the seventh but some nice defensive plays by freshman shortstop Lindsey Dierks kept that damage to a minimum and the Lady Spartans had the sweep.
The Lady Spartans improve their record to 8-2 overall and 2-2 in the Southern Division. They have a quick turn around as they host Minnesota West Saturday. Game times are 12:00 and 2:00.
