Spartans Win Season Open Over Mayville JV

The Spartans men's basketball team kicked off their season hosting Mayville State JV.  The visiting Comets jumped out to 14-0 lead thanks to some hot shooting from beyond the arc. The Spartans were able to settle down and chip away at the lead.  With some great half court defense the Spartans were able to go into the half with a 39-38 lead.   The Spartan came out in the second half and made an early run to increase there lead to 12.  The Comets fought back to get it back to two points but Spartans endurance and depth was too much for them and they pulled away to finish with a 90-65 victory.  The win puts the Spartans at 1-0 for the season.

The Spartans shot 53% from the field and 38% from behind the arc.  Four Spartans reached double digits in points.  Alend Alemadi was the leader offensively with 22 points and added 4 steals defensively.  Zakaria Zaid chipped in 17 points while Jonas Baune and Nic Pearson tallied 16 and 12 respectiviely.  Pearson and Baune each collected six rebounds to lead the Spartans.  Mert Taylor dished out 5 assists for the Spartans.

Head Coach Shawn Sorenson said this about the guys performance.   "With some nerves and a slow start it was good to see that this team was willing to fight no matter what situation they faced and their resiliency and perseverance payed off in the end.  Our defense improved throughout the game and that helped our offense get going.  Once we started to take care of the ball and make the extra pass we kept it rolling.  Great team win with balanced scoring and positive energy from all of our players and fans!"

The Spartan men will be in action next on November 15th when they travel to Thief River Falls, MN to take on Northland Community and Technical College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00pm.
