The Spartans led 83-81 when Minnesota West made a shot to tie the game at 83-83 with eight seconds left. Austin Miller had a running 30-foot shot that missed at the buzzer, sending the game to OT.
"This was a game of runs and close all the way," commented M State Head Coach Shawn Sorenson. "Turnovers and free throws tell the story. Another game that we must remember enought to learn from, but forget enough to move on and get ready for the next game."
Minnesota West shot 58.2% (32-55) from the field and placed four players in double figures. DeShawn Pickford led them with 22 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Alex Brown added 21 points and 6 rebounds, Kuol Chol had 20 points and 8 boards, and Jeffery Hudson contributed 12 points and 6 rebounds.
The Spartans shot 49.2% (29-59) from the floor and made 18-of-33 (54.5%) shots from 3-point range. They were able to hit only 12 of 25 free throws and had 18 turnovers in the game. Chris Tungseth hit 9-of-15 field goal attempts and 8-of-12 3's, scoring a game high 26 points. Samuel Priem scored 24 and Austin Miller added 21 points. Priem was 9-for-13 and 6-for-9 on 3's. Aaron Solberg led the Spartans with 10 rebounds and Miller distributed a team high 7 assists. Isaiah Lemke dished out 5 assists and had 2 steals.
The loss snapped a three-game Spartan winning streak.
M State (7-8, 1-1 MCAC South) will play Anoka-Ramsey Community College in Coon Rapids on Wednesday night.
