Trailing 67-66 the Mayville State JV team launched a wide open 3-point shot in the final seconds of the Spartans home and season opener on Friday night in Fergus Falls. The 3-point attempt missed, however, Mayville was able to tip in the rebound and escape with a 68-67 win over M State.
"After a good first half we struggled defensively in the second half, giving up 46 points," reported first year Head Coach Shawn Sorenson of the Spartans. "We have some great shooters on this team, but that was the other main aspect of the game that hurt us as we shot just 18% (6-33) from 3-point range."
M State hit 40% of their overall field goal attempts and Mayville State made 43% of their shots. Each team had 33 rebounds on the night.
Austin Volk led Mayville with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Austin Lee (13), Darrel Wilson (11) and Mark Toe (10) also scored in double figures for the visitors.
The Spartans will host NDSCS next Wednesday, November 8, at 7:30pm.
