The Spartans hosted the Itasca Vikings in their home opener on Saturday. The Vikings were picked to win the Eastern Division in the preseason. The Vikings found the end zone first when QB Javon McInnis scored on a QB sneak from 3 yards out. From there it was a defensive battle and both teams struggled to move the ball on offense. Late in the 2nd quarters the Vikings were able convert a 3rd and long to get on the scoreboard again. McInnis completed a 13 yard touchdown pass to Antwan Downs to extend there lead at half to 13 - 0. The Spartans opened the 3rd quarter with a couple big runs and entered the red zone but failed to convert it to any points. Turnovers and penalities plagued the Spartans for the rest of the half and the Vikings were able to score 25 unanswered to win the game 38 - 0.
Peyton Pruitt threw for 123 yards and Joel Dorjuste lead the Spartans in rushing with 41 yards. Josh Yahsha led the Spartans with 63 receiving yards.
On the defensive side Jamar Mack led the Spartans with 9 tackles followed by Andy Nelson and Devon Salaam with 8 tackles. Milkaso Dedefo continued his strong play forcing 2 fumbles and recovering both of them. Moises Duran and Elijah Neal each recorded a sack. Ken McKay added his 2nd INT in two games and Decari Dickens recorded his first INT of his college career.
The Spartans will travel up to Moorhead, MN on Sunday September 8th to play Concordia - Moorhead JV. Kickoff is set for 1pm.
