Spartan Football Team Falls to Mesabi Range in Home Opener

"Coming into this season we have high hopes for this team, we just lost our way with mental mistakes against a team who played in the title game last season," assessed Head Coach Korey Fry. "In the first quarter alone the Spartans receiving core dropped 5 catchable balls that would have put them in great field position. I strongly believe most of our mistakes came from first game jitters. Not having a scrimmage in camp hurt us with timing and getting prepared for Mesabi.

The Spartans will have a short week in preparing for the Ironmen of Vermilion this Saturday at home. Both teams will look to get in the win column.

"Offensively, we were led by solid play from quarterback Winston Sweeting and wide receiver Kiandre Gosha both freshmen," said Fry. "Defensively, I felt we played well in areas. We just ran out of gas with injuries and overall time of possession. Mesabi dominated the clock with over 30 minutes in time of possession. Kyle Zuber who transferred in from Fort Scott Junior College played lights out with 15 tackles from his strong safety position. Our Defensive line was very actively early and often against Mesabi. We look to learn and grow from this loss."

Offensively, the Spartans get leading receiver Sterling Alexander back this week along with top transfers Lucas Maloney and Jaykwon Jefferson.
