Spartans Hand Fry First Head Coaching Victory

The Spartans offense was moving early and often. On their 1st drive of the game the Spartans scored on a Touchdown pass from backup QB Matt lovine to freshman wideout Travion Broadwater for a 7-0 Spartans lead. After a defensive stop the offense marched down field for another TD on a Marcus Davis pass to Devin George. That pushed the lead to 14-0. West would quickly answer on the next drive with a 53 yard touchdown pass.

Both teams would score another TD to go into the half 21-14 Spartans. Minnesota West would continue its attack through the air and tie the game at 21-21 mid way through the 3rd. The Spartans would answer with a 27 yard field goal from Jordan Foss.

At the start of the 4th the Blue Jays scored again, this time on a 55 yard screen pass on 3rd and 12.

"You could tell Minnesota West had all the momentum at this point in the game," said Head Coach Korey Fry of the Spartans.

M State ended 3 straight drives with 2 fumbles and an interception. The Spartans defense would come alive and get the offense back in the game. Spartans corner back Alfonso Battle recorded 2 interceptions one of which went back for a touchdown. The Spartans offense would close Minnesota West out for good with a Davis to freshman wideout Jarbari Howard TD pass. Minnesota West would put up a late touchdown to bring the score to 38-35 Spartans, earning Coach Fry his first career win as a head coach.

"This was a special moment for this team and myself," said Fry. "Our message was to play for the player next to you, each player really took to that and we had our best day by far as a team."

The Spartans (1-2) will be on the road next Saturday traveling to Thief River Falls to play Northland Community and Technical College.
