The Spartans started to get in the rhythm of the game in the third quarter when quarterback Marcus Davis connected with Sterling Alexander for 37-yard touchdown. Davis ran it up the middle for the two-point conversion, bringing the score to 28-8. After the Spartans defense quickly stopped the Mesabi Range Norsemen, the Spartan offense had great field position. After two plays, Davis scrambled in to the end-zone for a touchdown, and Jordan Foss kicked the extra point to bring the score to 28-15.
The Spartans scoring momentum ended with costly penalties assessed to the team. The Norsemen took advantage of the momentum shift and scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. "Offensively, the quarterback Marcus Davis, showed us his toughness," said Fry. "Defensively, Andrew Costello led the team with 11 tackles and 2 sacks."
Korey Fry ended his game remarks by saying, "Mesabi is a great team and I strongly believe they will be one of the top contenders in our conference this season. They played a great game today and it was an eye opener for the Spartans. The adversity we battled early in the game ended up being the deciding factor. We have 40 freshman and 10 sophomore players so this is a season to grow and move forward together as a team."
Next Saturday the Spartans will head to Ely, MN to face Vermilion Community College.
