M State grabbed an early lead in Monday's first game on a pair of RBI singles by Jake Dykhoff and Matt Pietsch. This was followed up later when Rory Drewes went yard for his first collegiate homerun in the fourth inning.
Despite seeing its four-run lead whittled down by the end, the Spartans still held off Rainy River CC for a 5-4 victory on Monday.
Eric Salvesen earned the win surrendering two runs on five hits over six innings, striking out two. Skylar Mursu and Chandler Gramm entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Mursu recorded the last two outs to earn his 6th save.
Tyler Gray took the loss for Rainy River CC. He went four innings, allowing five runs on three hits and striking out three.
The Voyageurs took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning but the Spartans stormed back and taok the lead on a 2 RBI single by Ryan Schmitz. Later on the Spartans opened up their lead on RBI singles by Tom Magnusson and Jake Dykhoff.
Despite falling down by five runs in the fourth inning, Rainy River CC fought their way back to tie the game at 8 runs apiece. But in the bottom of the sixth Rory Drewes tripled with the bases loaded, scoring three runs giving the MState the 11-9 win.
Westley Johnson(2-0) recorded the victory for the Spartans. Austin Stanislawski and Skylar Mursu entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Mursu recorded his 7th save of the season. He lead the MCAC in saves.
Matt Hagen started the game for the Spartans giving up three runs on four hits over four innings, and striking out six.
Ryan Schmitz led Minnesota State Spartans with two hits in four at bats.
