Two members of the M State-Fergus Falls baseball team have received All-State recognition with freshman Matt Pietsch being named first team All-State and freshman Ryan Schmitz being selected to the second team.
Pietsch, an outfielder, consistently hit for average and picked up key RBI's for the Spartans over the course of the regular season. The Fargo North High School product hit .452 with a home run and 21 runs batted in. He also stole three bases.
Schmitz, a pitcher/infielder from Perham, batted .301 with 3 home runs and 32 runs batted in. He also scored 16 runs, had 3 doubles and 34 total bases in 91 plate appearances.
Former Spartan and Fergus Falls High School graduate Jason Fischer received the Central Division Coach of the Year honors. Fischer coaches at St. Cloud Technical and Community College. The Cyclones were 19-7 overall and won the Central Division title with an 8-1 record. They captured the Region XIII championship by beating Century College in a three game series, 2-1. SCTCC will open play in the NJCAA Division III World Series on Saturday when they face Rowan-Gloucester of New Jersey. The Cyclones are the number seven seed in the tournament.
