Spartan Baseball Teams Splits Four Games with Vermilion

On Saturday, Vermilion won the opener, 6-1, scoring single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. M State scored a run in the bottom of the third on a run scoring single by Devin Bush, scoring Matt Pietsch who had doubled. Vermilion then pushed across three in the fifth and added another run in the sixth to close out the scoring. Bush and Pietsch both went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Spartans. 

The Spartans won the nightcap on Saturday, 10-0, behind the 3-hit pitching of Levi Arnold (6IP, 3H, 1BB, 6K). Ryan Schmitz delivered a home run, walked twice and scored three times for M State. Harry Samuelson went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs batted in, Dustin Beliles had two RBI and Devin Bush was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in. Catcher Cody Arlt was 1-for-2 with a walk and a pair of runs scored. 

Vermilion posted a 4-3 win in the first game of the day on Sunday. M State struck for a run in the bottom of the third, however, Vermilion scored twice in the top of the fourth. The Spartans got the lead back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Vermilion regained the advantage by scoring twice in the top of the sixth. Pietsch (2-4, R) led the Spartans at the plate and Arlt knocked in a run. Skylar Mursu (6IP, 9H, 4ER, 4BB, 4K) took the loss. 

Bush tossed a complete game 4-hit shutout in the Spartans 8-0 win in game two, striking out seven batters and walking three. Casey Peterson delivered a double and drove in four runs, Samuelson had two runs batted in, Pietsch was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI and Schmitz scored twice. Braden Thompson also had a run-scoring single for M State.
