The Spartan coaches in the Spartan athletic department also select what is called the Coaches Award. This award is typically awarded to one male and one female student athlete that has exemplified what it means to be a Spartan. It is a person of high character, a great teammate, and someone that is always willing to help the coaches and others be their best.

The Female Coaches award winner was awarded to Katie Merrick. Katie is a sophomore from Elbow Lake and attended West Central Area High School. Katie has been active in Lady Spartan athletics, participating two years in volleyball and one year in softball.

In a very rare occurrence, there was a repeat winner for the Male Coaches Award. For the second year in a row, the award goes to sophomore golfer Jordan Kern. Jordan is from Wadena and graduated from Wadena High School. Jordan is a member of the very successful M State Fergus Falls golf team and will be part of the team that travels to the NJCAA National Tournament in June.
